Hey Community,
From time to time, we need to adjust our schedule for certain features. We are well aware that the Document Provider is the most-requested feature of the Android app, but despite this fact, we need to temporarily shift our attention to other tasks within this project. This blog post you’re reading right now is to keep you, our community, updated and inform you that we are unable to stick to our original plan. Unfortunately, this means that any further development of the Document Provider feature needs to be postponed to the end of this year.
This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://cryptomator.org/blog/2021/07/22/android-document-provider/

So uh when? Its been quite a while, on iOS it works so what is the matter with android implementation?

This is actually the one thing stopping me from using Cryptomator as my daily driver. I predominantly organise files on my phone, rather than desktop, these days. And without the document provider dialogue it’s way more of a pain to save files to the cloud, as you need the extra step of downloading it to shared storage and then going to files, and sharing the file to the cryptomator app.
Other, even small time, cloud providers provide the document provider dialogue so you can save files directly.
It’s a shame, because I already paid for the android app, but hardly use it because it’s too much of a pain to use.
The desktop app is fantastic, but again, if I can’t use it on my phone easily, it’s not very useful.
Really hoping this feature can be implemented.
Kind regards

This feature started to be asked in 2017 by your customers (customers, as the android app was a paid app), many, many users claimed they need it to be usable on android and you replied working on it.
Without this feature it’s quite impossible to change a document open on an android phone from the crypted cloud and save it back after ended the change.
I never seen before a developement team who promise such a requested a feature for 8 years but never achieve its developement and continue to promise it for the next year… 8 years is a very very long time.

Hey everyone,
I recently purchased the app hoping to use it in a specific way, but unfortunately realized it’s missing a key feature I was counting on. That’s pretty disappointing. I don’t mind the small cost, but after looking into the history of this feature and how it’s been communicated and prioritized, it’s hard to recommend the app to others right now.
Has development on this been abandoned? Should I uninstall and look for an alternative, or is it actually worth waiting? If so, what kind of timeline are we realistically looking at?
Thanks in advance.
