First steps with Cryptomator

Hi there, I’m a little bit stacked with Android version.

I did choose a directory for Cryptomator let’s call it CryptDir, then I click + button to create a vault. It did create it with name “Vault” inside CryptDir.

I see using regular Android file explorer a directory with name “d” and two file “masterkey” and “vault.cryptomator”.

The questions are:

  1. Where is actually the vault? “CryptDir” dir in my case or “Vault” dir.
  2. When I tried to upload directories within cryptomator I wasn’t able to upload dirs only files. What if I have 100 files to upload, should I choose it one by one?
  3. When the vault is unlocked should I be able to observe it with regular Android file explorer
  4. To manually backup the vault can I just copy the appropriate dir to external drive for example? Which dir to copy?

Hi and welcome.

You vault (the encrypted vault files) is the folder “Vault” and all subfolders and files. Keep in mind that the folder “Vault” must not be a root folder. This is why you have to select an other root, and in your case this is the folder “CryptDir”.

unfortunately, there’s actually no way to upload folders. This will change as soon as the document provider feature is implemented (yes, it is announced since a long time, Im afraid there is no ETA so far.)

No. you can only look in your vault by using the cryptomator app. This will also change as soon as the document provider feature is implemented. Then your vault will be accessed via the file explorer on your phone.

Yes you can. In Your case copy the dir “Vault” and everything that is in it. I recommend to have an unencrypted, local backup of your files as well (no matter which encryption tool you are using)

Ah, ok, I can deal with zip archive I guess

But I actually can, even If I swipe up Cryptomator app (quit it) I can go inside “Vault” dir in my case and still see 1 folder calls “d” and some other dirs inside it. And those two files still present as well. Does it mean that vault in unlocked?

what you see (folder “d” and everything thats in your folder “Vault”) are the encrypted files cryptomator creates when you store a file in your vault. You see not whats IN the vault. These encrypted vault files are what you typically want to store online.

Thanks, store online alongside with two files “masterkey” and “vault.cryptomator”? Or are these files should keep privately

Please do not change anything of the encrypted files. Yes, also the masterkey file and vault file can be stored online.
See here: Why is the masterkey stored in the cloud?
