Cannot sync Nextcloud due to long filename

So, I have been in this following links:

  1. Problems with long filenames/paths
  2. Unable to open download some files (filename too long most likely)
  3. “Can cryptomator shorten some too long file name? #2477” (it is an issue from Cryptomator’s GitHub, I could not add the link since I’m a new user and I’m limited to 2 links per post)

I’m on Linux Mint, I just reinstalled my system and now I am getting sync error on Nextcloud’s part because the filenames of the encrypted files are too long.

I have read that I can set the maximum length for filenames as a vault setting, but I imagine this affects new vaults, not existing.

I believe the only solution as of now for me, since I don’t have a spare computer, is to sync Nextcloud to a Windows Virtual machine, decrypt my files, create a new vault with the setting to allow for a shorter filename, then reupload it again to Nextcloud.

Is there anything else I could do?

If it is just a single file and the file is on the local drive (i.e. Nextcloud cannot upload it), then you can just rename it. (Use Decrypt Filename to get the name of the file).

Otherwise, i don’t see a different option in your case than starting with a new vault with a lower max. encrypted filename length. I suggest to make a backup before you move all your files.

Hey @infeo and thanks for the fast response.

Unfortunately I do not have the files on disk anymore. I will recreate the vault with the workaround I proposed. I marked your comment as an answer to close this thread

Just a follow up, I managed to solve the problem with this workaround. I set the max filename length to 100 characters in my new vaults.

Is there any security risk associated to shorter filenames, i.e are longer filenames more secure in any way?

No. Ist just a matter of compatibility
