Where do I put the files?

Hi! I’ve installed & read the docs but I’m still confused on how to ‘make it work’, I’m not amazingly techy

I’ve set up the vault inside my pcloud network drive, so it’s a folder that appears alongside my other folders, it says don’t put files in this folder.

Cryptomator also has it’s own network drive. Is this where I copy everything into? That doesn’t make a copy onto my harddrive right? (Had a big issue with this with another cloud service  ) Or, does creating the vault inside the drive automatically protect everything (I don’t think it does but just checking)

The docs also said something about needing to copy individual files not folders? So I don’t drag folders, but create folders and copy the files?

Help would be much appreciated, thanks!

Hi

Yes.

Every file you put into the virtual drive will create an encrypted file on your HD in the pCloud folder. So physically it’s 1 file (the encrypted one). The unencrypted file in your virtual drive is just a view of the encrypted file.

On you desktop you can work with the virtual drive hast as you would with any usb drive. There’s no restriction. This includes copy/move of entire folders.

Nevertheless if you use cryptomator for encryption or not: please don’t forget to make backups of your files. :grinning:

Do you have any external backup recommendations? On the cheaper side, ideally. (Also, would I back up from the vault? Or the normal files)

I do my backups on an external HD. And they are not encrypted by cryptomator, as I use cryptomator only for online files.

Oh, after you drag them into the vault, do you delete the existing files that weren’t protected? And then use only the vault from then on?

That’s up to you how you like to work with your files.
Speaking about backups, there must be more than 1 file. Otherwise it’s not a backup.
