When I attempt to change a file’s name, or to copy and paste, move or save a file to the the drive, file explorer hangs

Hi Michael,

You were very gracious in assisting me when I first installed Cryptomator last year. I am reaching out because I am experiencing a frustrating and lingering issue after upgrading to Windows 11 Pro. When I attempt to change a file’s name, or to copy and paste, move or save a file to the the drive, file explorer hangs. The only thing that “releases” explorer is to forcibly lock Cryptomator and unlock twice then I am good for a while longer when the problem recurs.

I did a search in the logs after your question regarding WARN or ERROR messages and see the following repeated: “WARN o.c.cryptofs.dir.C9sInflator - P:\Vault\d\5J\7FOB2OL5F2PIPPMSYHPQEPQTO76LD5\h2By0ShyVXA3raIGhNsA0NMkdhY=.c9s could not be inflated”.

I also see the following ERROR message repeated: “ERROR o.c. frontend.fuse. ReadOnly Adapter - getattr failed.
java.io.IOException: Failed to load contents of directory file at path P:\Vault\d\UZ\36GFDVRHWHZOAFPO4K2KZKB5EZJG4L\RaKA8RRAkTBfh60BpsPdRT1YsX0T2dF5RArMXJ2y4n3TmtrY3cWSxNFoIrmuFDQv27tPjkuoa7IP.c9r\dir.c9r at rg.cryptomator.cryptofs@2.6.9/org.cryptomator.cryptofs.DirectoryIdProvider.load(DirectoryIdProvider.java:36)

Thanks in advance,
Moe

Hi Moe.
Are you on the latest cryptomator version?
Which volume type are you using?
If “automatic”, please have a look if you have WinFSP installed, and if so which version is installed.
If WinFSP is not installed, please install it.
If it is installed, but not Version 2.x, please uninstall it and install latest version 2.x
If WinFSP is already installed with Version 2.x, does changing the Volume type make any difference?

Hi Michael!

Thanks again for your quick response, it’s so appreciated!

Answers:

Yes, version 1.12.3 (msi-5219)

WinFsp

Yes it is installed and version 2.0.23075

If WinFSP is already installed with Version 2.x, does changing the Volume type make any difference?
No difference. I have tried all volume types except WinDav (HTTP address)

Thanks,
Moe

My questions to the comunity:

  1. Is anyone else using Cryptomator with Windows 11 Pro?
  2. Does it works or are there the same problems as descibte by Moe?

Great question Anja!

I have to say that while I have not used file explorer actively since yesterday when I switched to the WinDav (HTTP address) volume type (I’ve been a bit timid since experiencing the issue), the few times I have used file explorer, I have not experienced any issues. I do see a HTTP connection attempt for a second or two then it connects and everything works as expected. Perhaps it’s because I have not used explorer enough so I will to see then update here.

Btw, thanks Anja!

Have a great day!

  1. yes, I do
  2. works like a charm for me.

I tried to reproduce the behavior described by @capguy. But I couldnt.
And I do not know what might cause the given error message.
So unfortunately I cannot help here.
Maybe someone else?

Morning Michael,

I may have figured out what was causing that mysterious problem. It may have something to do with my VPN connection even though I have always used a VPN. Perhaps it is a combination of the VPN and my upgrade to Windows Pro, who knows. I kept testing by copying, pasting, changing a file’s name and deleting repeatedly and had no issues. I’ll keep testing and will update here as I learn more.

UPDATE: Problem still persists. After it “rests” for a while, a simple copy and paste attempt causes windows explorer to hang again. Oh well, I’ll keep looking for clues and experimenting.

Hello, i have a similar issue: When i tried to save a file from Word (for example, same issue with other apps) or when i tried to copy file to the vault, application and/or explorer hang.

I installed Cryptomator 1.12.3 (msi-5219) and I think I have the issue since the last update.

I have this informations in debug logs:

Here is my potential “workaround”. I created a secondary vault (you can name what you wish), and I copied, NOT moved, some files to this new vault. SO FAR, it seems to be working perfectly but time will tell. I’ll experiment for a few more days by doing the simple things I described that caused the issue in the first place and when the “workaround” is confirmed, I will then delete the old vault along with the files. If that fails, I will move all the files out of Cryptomator do a clean uninstall and reinstall. Hope that helps.
