What are files/folders in cryptomator vault folder?

Hello everyone,
I am a new user of cryptomator. I have created a vault in my local onedrive folder which therefore automaticlly syncs to my onedrive cloud.

But I am confused regarding how cryptomator works… Before I even open the vault and mount it as a drive, I can see these files within the onedrive folders, both locally and online…

c = Folder
d = Folder
IMPORTANT.rtf = Document
masterkey.cryptomator = cryptomator vault file
masterkey.cryptomator.1C07CF96.bkup = bkup file
vault.cryptomator.C47F6353 = cryptomator vault file
vault.cryptomator.C47F6353.bkup = bkup file

  1. Why are these files there and visible?
  2. Surely having these files visible makes it obvious that encrypted files are present?
  3. Would it cause any issues if I set the file attributes to hidden?
  4. What are the bkup files? Surely not backups of the key? if anything happens to the vault folder they will be gone also.

Hi and welcome.

click here for the documentation.

These are the encrypted vault files Cryptomator is generating when you put something in your opened vault (the virtual drive) to encrypt. These files are what you want to have synced with your online storage. So everything ok.

correct. somehow your encrypted data has to be stored. (not sure if I get your point)

Didnt try that, but I guess you can hide them from your explorer view. But that doesn’t mean they are invisible for everybody. At least they are visible again in your OneDrive. Im not sure here either if I get your point why you would want to do that.

Every time you have a successful login into your vault, Cryptomator creates a backup file of the masterkey and the vault file. Just in case your actual file gets damaged for whatever reason. Of course you can make your own backups as well.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the very quick reply. Is the Cryptomator documentation available to download as a pdf?

Re. the files Cryptomator creates in the vault folder. I appreciate these are the files which are synced to my onedrive, but I thought it would be just the key and the encrypted data. Not a problem now I know.

Re. my point about the files being visible in the vault folder and therefore obvious that encrypted files are present. I expected everything would be hidden/invisible to the casual user, so if my laptop was ever stolen the thief wouldn’t even be aware of the presence of encrypted files. I think this is what Veracrypt does, so I may be getting mixed up with that.
