Updating to the latest version fails if Cryptomator is loaded which means that you

  1. Uncheck ‘Launch Cryptomator on system start and then restart your computer.
    1. This is the only safe option for non-techy users

or

  1. Use Task Manager to end the Cryptomator task

Is it not possible for the installer to shut down the relevant files?

You can just make a right click on the taskbar item and choose “exit” to shut down cryptomator

This would create the risk that the encryption process might be accidentally terminated whilst encryption is in progress, which would probably result in the encrypted file being corrupted.

I got a tad confused by this as well, `update available` in app (Apple intel, and Apple silicon) so I clicked download (silicon first) app shut down, nothing … failed to work (did not update) tried the same on Intel (choice of download this time Silicone or Intel) chose intel, it downloaded, closed itself, did not work, nothing. So I gather, the best option here is to ignore in app notification, close down fully, download updated .dmg file then install … that worked for me. I do not use Windows so cant comment about that version. Linux, same procedure (I use app image). Anyway Team Cryptomator, keep up the GREAT work :slight_smile:

I would point out that a user is unlikely to want to update while in the middle of saving files. In any case the update install package should be capable of warning the user.

The sequence at this time is

  1. Power on pc
  2. Once login is complete either
    1. Cryptomator has started automatically or
    2. User starts Cryptomator manually
  3. Cryptomator loads and informs the user that an update is available
  4. TOO LATE - Cryptomator is already loaded
  5. The user visit sthe website and downloads the updated version
  6. The user opens the update which starts the install process
  7. At a certain point the install informs the user that the program is running
  8. The user has options to
  9. All options end with the same conclusion
  10. The update cannot be installed.
  11. If the user is a ‘techy’ they can use Task Manager to shutdown Cryptomator.
  12. For the ‘non techy’ there is NO desktop option to end the program (at least in Win 11)
  13. That user has to untick the ‘Launch Cryptomator on system start’ then restart the PC

Finally, don’t get me wrong, I think Cryptomator is an excellent program. I don’t know what I would have done if I had not come across it. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
