Moving files from Mega cloud to rsync.net/Hetzner Cloud

Hi there, I’m looking to move my files from the Mega PRO 2 cloud service to a different more secure cloud like rsync.net or Hetzner Storage. Disclaimer: I am very tech illiterate with no experience with the command line, and Im using Windows + Android. I was told that Cryptomator would be a good fit to encrypt my files client-side before sending them to the cloud services, but I have yet to figure out a pipeline for syncing files across platforms while ensuring E2EE. For rsync.net it apparently has to work with SFTP, and the same applies to Hetzner I think. In addition, I would like to continuously sync my Android phone folders to the cloud, encrypted as well. I’m not sure if this is a tall ask since I ‘dont know what I dont know’, so if it is I thank you for anyones patience in helping me and apologise in advance. Thank you.

Sincerely appreciated,
Ryan

Hi @Tetrandesthing .

I don’t know exactly what mega pro to is but rclone can Mount standard mega accounts of any price level and also their S4 compatible storage because I have both of them.

Check out an app called rclone. It has the ability to mount Both of those cloud providers that you’re interested in And Mega as well. You can Mount a drive to whichever of the ones that you choose and copy your files from Mega. Rclone.org. it does work at the command line so if you need help with the syntax for mounting a drive let me know and I will provide the syntax because I use Mega with rclone now.

With rclone you would create a remote cloud connection connection with

rclone config.

Then to mount.

rclone mount mega: m:

Then you create a config for your new provider and do a similar mount.

Then you can continue using Cryptomator.

My question is what do you find insecure about Mega? It provides end to end encryption with no server knowledge of your files and so encryptions kind of doubling the encryption making it even more secure.

Hi @LeoW

Mega “Pro 2” refers to their pricing plann, though I am currently using their Pro I plan (3 TB). Im not familiar with S3 or S4 storage. I will check out rclone, thank you for suggesting it to me! I’m not insecure with Mega, I am just considering alternate options to avoid being locked in. Perhaps it would be better if I invest in local physical HDDs or a NAS instead.

Thank you again
RD

You are welcome.

On windows rclone downloads as a zip file and has a single executable inside.

Periodically if you want to update the version of the software you can run this command.

rclone selfupdate

It will communicate with mothership and download and upgraded your software if necessary.

Lastly, the available commands, flags are Described and covered on their website.
