suddenly not accepting my password or my recovery key. 1Tb of lost data. i have upgraded, rebooted, and reinstalled. Nothing works. Has all my data been lost? Is there ANYTHING i can do?
Not sure if can help but I’ll try.
First, what is your O/S?
It’s not a guarantee it’s more of a long shot but you could try opening your vault using C running in a different operating system say your current one is Windows your alternate could be Linux. Linux can be booted from a USB stick and then try C from there. There’s no sensible reason why it should work under one operating system and not another. It could be related to your windows profile or configuration. There can be any number of reasons why you’re having trouble all of a sudden.
Do you have any backups? Even a backup of your encrypted vault restored to an alternate location might be accessible.
It is always important to backup your data regardless of whether you back it up in both encrypted and unencrypted forms or just one.
Passwords and recovery keys don’t work if the data is messed up. Hence the need to always back up your data.
hi & thanks. I had a backup. Needed the disk and never created a new one so i have no one to blame but myself. I wil try from linux and see what happens.. I wonder if this could be the problem: i recently replaced my pc with an identical one and to save having to reinstall everything i just moved my existing ssd to the new one. Everything else worked fine - no trouble. So i don’t expect it to be the problem, but..?
Another thing that you can try is creating a new local user account on your Windows computer and set up cryptomator from scratch from there.
Moving a vault from one location to another should not cause this problem so it may be related to your moving of the installation without doing a clean install on the new windows.
I suggest downloading a copy of Linux Mint and making a bootable USB flash drive. You can install Cryptomator in Linux and point it to your existing vault.
If you use a tool like Yumi multi boot disk loader with persistence. You will have the best situation this way because if you enable persistence you can install crypomator only once and it will remember having been installed from reboot to reboot even though it’s a bootable USB disk and not an actual install. Yumi provides this feature.
Easy troubleshooting: type your password in a simple .txt editor like notepad, verify it carefully and then copy-paste it. This might expose that the password you type is not what you think you are typing.
Have you gone through the steps in the Documentation Vault Recovery | Cryptomator Documentation
sorry it took me so long to get back - been traveling for work. i installed cryptomator on a different PC and it unlocked, so i went back to the original PC and tried again and this time it unlocked. as many times as i tried i doubt i mistyped my password every time but i suppose it is possible. many thanks for the help!
