Huge difference in size between encrypted vault and unencrypted files

Why is there a huge discrepancy in size between my unencrypted files (~1.5 TB) and the encrypted vault (“d” directory when trying to copy/paste says over 3 TB).

I had planned to copy over the encrypted vault folder entirely (the “d” folder, the 5-7 other files in the root directory like '“masterkey” and so on) to move the vault to a new computer.

There are about 1.5 TB of unencrypted files, and the cloud provider shows the same. Viewing the properties of the “d” folder also confirms the same size.

The issue is when I go to copy the encrypted vault onto a 2 TB drive, Windows gives me an error that this cannot happen because there are about 3.5 TB of files trying to go onto a 2 TB drive.

I do not have access to a larger external drive like 4 TB to see if the copy/paste would actually work.

From reading prior answers, I understand that the encrypted files should be close in size to the unencrypted vault.

Sharing if this is helpful for others, as I did not find why this is happening so transitioned to the new computer via unlocked files.

On the new computer, I signed into Dropbox and left it for an hour to download some of the encrypted files. Then, I paused Dropbox sync.

Used Cryptomator to “open existing vault,” and unlocked the partially downloaded vault.

I copied all my unencrypted files from the external drive into the unlocked vault. I restarted Dropbox sync after all files had been copied over.
