How to share files with friends and family without them needing to use Cryptomator?

Hi, so I tried Cryptomator in a test folder and it’s working as expected. I can access the encrypted files once I unlock the vault.

But I have a little problem. I use Dropbox for both work and personal use. The personal files are documents and a lot of media. I have a lot of sensitive data that I would prefer to encrypt in the eventuality of a hack or data breach. I often need to share such files with my friends & family. I usually just right-click and create a view-only link for the files or folders I want to share. With an encrypted vault, the files and folders on my Dropbox cannot be used or shared as is.

But I’m not sure how to do it without manually moving files from the vault to a regular folder in my Dropbox, unless we’re part of a team that share a Cryptomator vault. Either way is not very practical.

I would appreciate some solutions or advice, thanks.

Hi.

You can’t decrypt any files in a Cryptomator vault without having Cryptomator locally installed and knowing the vault Passwort and having the encrypted vault files available to the Cryptomator App. This is an end to end encryption.
So you can’t share a file in your vault with someone not having Cryptomator installed.
In fact you cannot share single files in your vault at all.

What you can do is

  1. share a complete vault by granting access to your online storage and giving away your vault password.
  2. use Cryptomator hub for working with teams on a vault.
