How exactly does Cryptomator's use of Scrypt protect against brute force attacks?

I’ve read that Cryptomator uses a derivation function called Scrypt to protect your passphrase against brute force attacks. How exactly does this work, and does it offer a level of protection against brute forcing comparable to tools like Veracrypt and KeePass that allow for customizable hash iterations?
