Hello everyone,
I’m using Cryptomator on both iPhone (latest iOS) and Mac, and recently encountered a serious issue with a Word document stored in one of my vaults.
The file is named “Lol.docx”, and it now appears as 0 KB (see screenshot attached). I also noticed a file named ~$Lol.docx (162 bytes), which seems to be a Microsoft Word temporary file. When I try to open either of them, Word shows a recovery prompt but only opens a blank document both on iOS and mac.
The vault is stored inside a Google Drive-synced folder
. Unfortunately, Google Drive does not allow restoring previous versions of folders, only individual files. Since the corrupted file now shows as 0 KB, there’s no usable version to revert to.
I regularly access this vault from both my iPhone and Mac, so it’s possible that the corruption happened during a sync conflict or while editing from one of the devices.
My questions:
- Is there any way to recover the previous contents of the “Lol.docx” file from the vault?
- Does Cryptomator store any file history, backup, or previous versions that I can access?
- Can I try to recover anything by manually inspecting the encrypted
d/
folder structure? - Could this have been caused by a failed write/sync operation between Word, Cryptomator, and Google Drive?
I would greatly appreciate any help or guidance. This file is very important to me, and I’m willing to try any recovery steps suggested.
Thank you!
