General Questions

I would like to use the Cryptomator vault in the following way:

  1. Don’t want to pay the price of encryption/decryption for every file that I will access in my day-to-day work. In other word, I would like to keep folders, e.g. “MyDocuments”, intact on my C: drive.
  2. I would like to use a synch software, in the case Goodsync, to keep up to date the files in the Cryptomator vault with the content of my hard drive
  3. I would like to keep only one copy of my data on my hard drive, therefore using the OneDrive “Minimize Space” feature.

Questions:

  1. If I use Cryptomator as described above, Goodsync will add / replace / delete files in the vault and OneDrive will just keep a placeholder for these files. Is there an issue using Cryptomator this way?
  2. What is the minimum set of files in the vault for which I must request OneDrive to keep a local copy for? This way I can continue to use Goodsync, even in offline situation, and rely on OneDrive to synch the files in the cloud when I reconnect.
  3. Since the files are synched by OneDrive itself, how can I retreive the history for any given file?
  4. It is suggested to verify the integrity of the vault from time to time. If the “Minimize space” is active, is this still possible since the local vault is built of placeholders for each file? Will Cryptomator have to pull each file from OneDrive in order to verify?

Hi.

To 1). No issue with that.
To 2) If you want to use your vault offline, you’ll have to have the complete vault offline. You would be able to open your vault just with the files in your root and the folder „d“, but it is more than likely that you do not see any files in your vault. You can not select folders in your encrypted vault files and expect to see a corresponding folder in your unencrypted view. In other words: offline will not work if you want to use the files on demand function.
To 3) You can’t. The file versioning is a feature of OneDrive. And as OneDrive has no information to your files anymore, it will not provide a history.
To 4) didn’t do this so far, so here’s feedback from other users needed.
