Forgot vault password, what can I do?

If you are reading this, but have not yet lost your vault password, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you to

  1. create a recovery key and save it in a safe place
  2. create continuously backups of the unlocked vault

If you lost your vault password, you have still some options to recover from:

Recovery Key

In the best case, during vault setup, you created a recovery key which you can use to reset your password.

Backup

Still a good option, you created backups of the vault content which means you can create a new vault and copy the content into the new vault.

Cracker

Your password isn’t too long, you have a powerful PC and nothing to lose, you can use the vault password cracker which will consume a lot of time and energy (for good reason).

Is the recovery key only visible/extractable in newer versions of cryptomator or was this the case in older versions like 1.4.x too?

The recovery key was introduced in Cryptomator 1.5.0. After updating Cryptomator, you can still extract the recovery key for older vaults.
