Folder contains an encrypted file

if a folder contains an encrypted file, can folder be renamed?

Please do not mess around with your encrypted vault folders. You will destroy your vault. No, you can’t rename the folders or encrypted files cryptomator has created. If you do, the files cannot be decrypted anymore.

how about if I did not use cryptomator to encrypt the file?

Welcome to the Cryptomator community :slightly_smiling_face:,

you can place any file you want inside a Cryptomator vault. Cryptomator does not inspect the files and think “oh this file looks already encrypted, i don’t have to do anything” or anything at all. It simply encrypts the data placed inside a vault.

Also keep in mind, what @Michael said: Do not edit the files or folders on the vault storage location (where you created the vault). Only edit the files inside the unlocked vault.
