Filen Tresor sehr langsam

I have not used Filen, but I have mounted a Cryptomator Vault inside a rclone mount on OneDrive. It did work, it was very very slow and I felt very uncomfortable using for lack of robustness and fear or corrupted data.

Why use Cryptomator with Filen anyway? Filen have there own “Vaults” which are rclone based using rclone encyption scheme. The encyrption key is private and only known to you, rclone is open-source so it achieves End-to-End private encryption. In my opinon only, I think you are taking a risk with this setup, so make sure you have a good backup of your unencrypted files.

Encrypting your files is good practice and safe and Filen Vaults achieve that. Keep it simple and robust. Don’t go overboard with complex layout. Discovering you files are corrupted is much worse. Encyrpted backups are important.

What do you mean by that? Uploading the files using Cryptomator as well?

No I did not mean to use Cryptomator as well. Just whichever backup solution you use, keep it simple and thus robust to avoid corrupted files.

Hi,

I had the same experience as you, VERY VERY slow uploads to Filen, and yes it is to do with how they encrypt their own cloud.

I use pCloud as my main store (encrypted with Cryptomator) on their normal cloud, I have paid for pCloud encryption, but do not trust them (claim to be open source, but are not) but uploads are quick.

Basically, you can use any cloud, or any storage (usb etc) encrypted with Cryptomator, the vaults are then just a blob of nonsense, and unreadable.

In fact I now use Filen as ‘dumb storage’ and upload my Cryptomator vault there JUST as an extra “backup” (it can take as long as it wants) as well as other locations.

I hope that makes sense.
