Different RDP-disconnect behaviour since moved to Windows 11

Hi!
Just moving from Windows 10 to 11 with my Vaults… not problem on this side until I disconnect from my RDP-Session.
My typical work is:

  • Connect via RDP to my W10
  • unlock my Vaults, map them, work with the contend
  • disconnect from the W10 (no logoff, simple close the rdp)
  • reconnect to my W10, all works fine again, (yes reconnected as same user), can work with the mapped dirves of my vaults.
  • smooth since years

However… moved to Windows 11 doing the same

  • connect via RDP to the W11
  • unlock Vaults, map, work…and so on
  • disconnect from rdp (closing RDP-Sessionwindow, or do a tdiscon, however)
  • reconnect as same user, every open app is still running, but NO cryptomator
  • the app is simply closed, all mapped vaults gone.

It is the 1.5.1. I tried even “Start Cryptomator in Background”… nothing one rdp-dis-/reconnect and cryptomator is gone.
I do not see anything in the Windows-Logs.
Ah…forgot to mention, the vaults are local, no Webdav or stuff… simply “files on my local drive”

any clues or hints for me, would be great.

Cheers
Matthias

Hi, same problem here :(, i don’t find any solution :frowning:

With W10 all work fine but with W11 (IOT for me), so 24H2 this bug appear … only Cryptomator is closed when i disconnect my rdp session :frowning:

This is also a problem for me and a real issue i’d love to have solved (or a workaround)

Same thing here, really annoying :frowning:
Can’t find any solution or workaround, tried for hours now …

Hi, @MattG42 and @Murks and others.

When you mentioned specifically RDP, that suggests the built-in Windows remote desktop which is only available in Pro. Are all of you running the pro version of Windows 10 and 11?

Regardless of the version of Windows have any of you tried any alternate remote desktop programs to see if they exhibit similar Behavior?

If your Vault must reside on another Windows desktop computer for whatever your purpose would it not be easier to map a drive letter to the location of the Vault and run cryptomator on your local machine?

You can also use MS sftp, which comes with Windows. This is how I access vaults on other machines.

Hi @LeoW,

well yes naturally the Pro otherwise I couldn’t use RDP to that machine, and Windows 11, with Windows 10 the problem does not occur.
This is a pure win11 problem.

In my case the Sync/sftp-Stuff is not practicable, following scenario.
Main-Machine, Windows 11 Pro, no Domain-Connect (therefore no GPO), all my apps installed, my normal working machine.
On the road I connect to the network with my Laptop, and jump on my Main-Machine via RDP.
Open the Vault, working, etc… disconnecting the Laptop, because of break, or relocating, reconnect from the Laptop again to the Machine via RDP, and the Vault is closed, unmapped and even the Cryptomator GUI (lower left corner Icon) is closed.

In Windows 10 it runs for years this way, since switching to 11 it is broken.

Cheers
Matt

Hi,

That is suggesting to me that Microsoft has screwed around with RDP between the change of Windows 10 to Windows 11.

I can only offer you one suggestion and that is to do a quick experiment with an alternate remote desktop program.

I like and use an open source program called rustdesk.

Perhaps you can give that a try and see if you get desirable results.

I just did a search in Microsoft Copilot and it did indicate that there are significant differences between RDP and Windows 10 and windows 11 and windows 11 has more security requirements than Windows 10 did.

They mentioned cryptomator specifically as one of the applications that closes automatically when you terminate the session.

My research suggests that it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be able to continue to use Microsoft RDP. My expert opinion is to try another app and if it works you have your answer.

Hello,

I’m using the Remmina RDP client from a linux machine to connect to the Windows 11 Pro machine running Cryptomator. Unfortunately the drive map or sftp solution is no option for me.

I’ve tried a VNC server which doesn’t work for performance reasons.

Hi,

Vnc will suck for performance as you have determined.

Did VNC work for you even though it was too slow to be practical? If the answer is yes then RDP is absolutely your problem. 24h2 of Windows 11 could also be interfering.

I am almost certain that RDP relies on ntlm Authentication which was depreciated in Windows 11and no longer developed .

A non RDP program is what I believe you need to solve your problem.

Nomachine is one such program that doesn’t use RDP or ntlm and provides end to end encryption although it does not self-route through routers and gateways like rustdesk or other programs like any desk.

Considering you were able to make an active connection with VNC you might be knowledgeable about port forwarding and if that is the case there is a very fast remote program that he can try that blows VNC away and it is called “nomachine”.

Both nomachine and rustdesk have Linux clients that you can use. I use both them in your same config.
