With the new update to version 1.17.0, Cryptomator becomes even better — more stable, more compatible, and more user-friendly. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at the most exciting new features and explain why this upgrade is worth it.
I updated but cannot see that Windows Hello is activated. In options I experimentally chose “Passwörter speichern in Windows Hello” (? save passwords in Windows Hello? I thought it is used for an alternative or second log in option to a written password?)
This way ot the other, no expected Windows Hello window pops up when accessing a vault.
Thanks for this great Software! I use cryptomator a lot.
I wonder how secure it is to save the vault password and unlock it with Windows hello. I see that there is a file “windowsHelloKeychain.json” created when I save a password for a vault. I assume it contains the vault password in an encrypted way.
Are there some details available on security of using Windows hello with crypotmator or can you please provide technical details, how unlocking with Windows hello works and how secure it is. Thank you!
I wouldn’t trust Windows with anything, so I continue to use an old fashioned manually entered password.
I NEVER use any “convenience features”, for unlocking any vaults, even with Linux (my main OS), but Windows is on-par with malware as far as I am concerned. If I can’t be bothered to enter a password, then shame on me.
even deinstallation and new installation is not working - I cannot access my files - now I am getting angry and frustrated - is there a way to install the last version?
I also have the same problem with 1.17.0. I use Hello without a problem and I have tried to get Cryptomator to use Hello but with no luck. If I enter the usual password and tick the box to save the password, Cryptomator works fine but I am never challenged with any Hello authentication etc. Based on what I have read, what would happen if someone wanted to use Cryptomator without Hello but wanted to save the password? If their machine was using hello, would Cryptomator (if working) keep asking for a secondary authenication challenge?
On Windows you can choose between the keychains Windows Hello and the Windows DPAPI to store passwords. You can read in the docs how to change the used keychain.
Windows Hello is not used as a second factor to unlock, but is used to replace typing your password.
Thanks for this and I think I am one step closer. If I store the password in Hello and tick the box to remember the password, I do get challenged to authenticate using Hello. However, if I then lock the vault and unlock it again, I am nolonger challenged. The vault is just unlocked without any interaction from Hello. My expectation is that it should challenge the user with Hello everytime the vault is unlocked.
