I accidentally deleted several files and can no longer find them.
My vault is stored on OneDrive. I found the relevant encrypted files and folders in the OneDrive recycle bin and restored them using OneDrive’s restore function. However, these files are not showing up anywhere—at least I haven’t been able to locate them so far. Do you have any tips? The restoration happened a while ago, and my OneDrive is fully synced. I also noticed that OneDrive immediately triggered a sync process during the restoration.
Additionally, I was wondering if Cryptomator might introduce a recycle bin feature in the future, e.g., with a retention period of 30 days?
Files are only listed inside the vault, if the encrypted files are restored exactly to the path where they were deleted from.
Example: You have the file /taxes/2024/receipt_buissness_lunch.pdf inside your vault. The actual, encrypted path from the vault storage root is /taxesVault/d/AA/BBBBBBB/ccccc==.c9r. If the file is deleted, it is moved to the recycle bin. I don’t know how the restore feature of OneDrive works, but if it does not restore the files to its original location, they cannot automatically decrypted anymore.
You can try the vault heath check and see, if it lists any missing directories
Thank you so much for your quick response. I’ve completed the health check, and everything appears to be in order. I’ve tested the deletion and recovery process again, and it seems to be working fine now. Perhaps today’s update to Cryptomator had a positive effect. However, the data I deleted a couple of days ago is still missing. It’s not in the Recycle Bin, and the logs show that it was restored to the vault, but it’s not visible in the decrypted vault. I guess I’ll have to accept that this data is likely lost in the encrypted file system of cryptomator…?!
Re. your wish: I also think, a recycle bin for Cryptomator would be great - and I strongly assume that we are not the only ones who deleted something and could not restore it…
